Our friends over on the Jackson5ABC site posted recently about a new J5 cd box set that will be issued on Oct 5, 2010. Yoann noted the strange choice for the fourth cd (Dancing Machine), boxed with the J5's first three albums. I'm not so critical of that choice, although I myself would have preferred The Christmas Album, but I must protest the choice of art for the box:
Okay, let's go over this one more time:
Jackie + Tito + Jermaine + Marlon + Michael = Jackson 5 (Motown era)
Jackie + Tito + Marlon + Michael + Randy = Jacksons (Epic era)
It almost feels like Motown is trying to make up for all those years they left poor Randy off the J5 LP covers, even though he was at most of the photo sessions. But why sacrifice Jermaine?
UPDATE: Our friends at Motown Universal have assured us that this is not the art for the box set -- although the box set will be released later this year.
Doubt this is a motown release...
ReplyDeletewe wouldnt have rights to that artwork nor would we use it even if we did.
I didn't think Motown would make such an error, but it's Universal release, according to the Jackson5ABC site. I assumed it was Universal Motown. Am I wrong?
ReplyDeleteWhat strikes me as odd is the choice of that photo. Motown does not have rights to "The Jacksons" and i'm pretty sure Mr. HW would never use a photo like that for a J5 release. The 4 CD's....possible.
ReplyDeleteThe photo is definitely the wrong choice. That's the frustrating thing. And I agree on what many have said - the fourth album selection... Dancing Machine!? Super random... But then I started thinking - that to me is Motown's way of catching eyes - Dancing Machine is well known and has grown more and more on the younger generation through commercials etc... I feel they chose the album simply for the title - DANCING MACHINE... People say "ooooh, I love that song! I'm getting this one!" lol... I want another Hip-O release!
ReplyDeleteSince it's so far out, it could be that photo is just a mock-up.
ReplyDeleteAnd I do have one example somewhere in my collection of a Motown ad that used a photo of the Jacksons from "Goin' Places." I think it appeared in Jet magazine. I'll see if I can dig it up.
But you're right -- Motown didn't usually make this mistake, especially given all the litigation surrounding the group's departure.
By the way, the photo itself is pretty funny. It looks like Marlon is saying "Smell my arm pits!" and the brothers are responding accordingly.
ReplyDeleteMarlon really did have such a HILARIOUS personality. Such an awesome guy and I love Michael's expression here... Also, I love the photo with Randy with the Jacksons. Randy was such a cool guy with a HUGE amount of talent. He deserves major credit.
ReplyDeletei believe its just a "mock up" at best. I asked and they laughed..."Wrong Photo"!!
ReplyDeleteThe Hip-O release is a Uni-Motown release thru Hip-0
So Hip-O is definitely releasing the 4-cd box set? Any chance there will be bonus tracks? :)
ReplyDeleteI was referring to "Live At The Fourm" being a Uni-Motown release thru Hip-O.
ReplyDeleteGotcha! (This is how rumors get started. Sorry for providing grist for the rumor mill.)
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't be the first time for Motown to put a Jacksons cover... like "Jackson 5 Icons" : http://www.jackson5abc.com/compilations/2009-icons/
ReplyDeleteAccording to HW, this is a wrong cover. But a true box set!
ReplyDeleteIt's really weird that Motown uses a Jacksons Photo as the Cover of a J5 CD, while the brothers were not even Motown artists anymore when they changed their band name...
ReplyDeletehere's another Motown compilaton with a post Motown picture!
